Community Resources

Alta California Dance Company A group of local dance lovers that also perform for special events.

California Views, historical photographs from Pat Hathaway.  Pat has one of the most extensive collections of photos, some dating to the earliest days of California, some to the earliest days of photography..

City Seal of Monterey and it's own historic flag, and a large set of community links

Monterey County Historical Society has a very comprehensive set of links to the best historical sites on the web, particularly pertaining to Monterey County.

Historic Monterey, a partnership among Department of Parks, City of Monterey.

Monkey Models Phil Monroe and his Capuchin monkeys, now in front of the Customs House, have been entertaining generations of visitors for 30 years

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary  Much of what makes it beautiful here is part of the Sanctuary.  Find out about it before you come.

Monterey Bay Aquarium   There is a reason why millions of visitors pass through the doors each year.  Although the little Great White Shark in the Outer Bay exhibit is now back in the wild, the rest of the exhibit is stunning, as always.  My favorite has been the jellyfish.

Part of the Aquarium's programs is the new Aquarium Adventures, including a Science Under Sail program.  It's on a 65-foot sailboat, comfortable and interesting.  We've sailed on it, and Captain Homer Holm has it together. SUS is seasonal, because of the California rainy season. Contact him about his season at Science Under Sail.

Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Helping you get more from your getaway with information on attractions, events, accommodations and much more. Another link to MCCVB takes you directly to their History page, where we reside (it's a little cramped, but we manage).

Monterey History & Art Association operates the Stanton Center from whence our tours start.  Part of the Stanton Center is one of the finest exhibits of boat models anywhere.  It's well worth the stop and the miniscule admission charge.  Currently, the exhibit is on the treasures of the Manila Galleons, a traveling show from San Diego.  Stunning!  Pay in the ship's store.

Monterey Public Library's California Room is an enormous local history resource.  Many original documents and collected sources.

Monterey Visitor's Guide  A very impressive collection of the best of Monterey, including a way to check hotel availabilities and prices, activities for an entire family.  They will also custom design a visit for you, if you wish.

National Weather Service Monterey weather can be changeable.  Check here for weather updates or see our screen on Our Tours.

National Steinbeck Center, a comprehensive look at Salinas' native son, John Steinbeck's life, work and legacy. A visit to the Center should be part of every visit to Monterey.  Check with them before you go to see if they're open.

Other Tours

Up close and do-it-yourself:  kayak on the Bay.  Adventures by the Sea and AB Seas Kayaks  Note that you can get really close to the animals, but please maintain distance.  If they swim or fly away, they're uncomfortable.

Stand with your foot on the railing and sip the best:   Wine tastings at A Taste of Monterey and Wine from the Heart.  "Taste" is on Cannery Row; "Wine" is on Alvarado Mall and does once/month food/wine pairings with Wendy Brodie by invitation.

Here's one from well out of town--Old San Juan in Puerto Rico.  Debbie Molina of Legends of Puerto Rico knows not only Old San Juan, but the rest of the island.  Visiting PR?  Contact Debbie at www.legendsofpr.com.
