This is the flag that Monterey uses for daily
purposes. It is a design by Paul Mills from 1977 when he was the
director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Below is the full
design used for ceremonies. It has some interesting information
about the beginnings of Monterey. |

In 1850, when California became the 31st
state, Lt. Alfred Sully designed the city
coat of arms. He combined the arms of the Zuniga family
of Spain and the city's seal for this flag. The Count of
Monterrey, for whom Monterey is named, was a Zuniga (white quarters
& black stripe). |
