Monterey's City Flag

Community Resources

This is the flag that Monterey uses for daily purposes.  It is a design by Paul Mills from 1977 when he was the director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.  Below is the full design used for ceremonies.  It has some interesting information about the beginnings of Monterey.
In 1850, when California became the 31st state, Lt. Alfred Sully designed the city coat of arms.  He combined the arms of the Zuniga family of Spain and the city's seal for this flag.  The Count of Monterrey, for whom Monterey is named, was a Zuniga (white quarters & black stripe).
